1st: Hair

Everybody probably knows Hair, and one of its most famous song: Let the Sun Shine! It’s the story of a group of antimilitarists caught in the Vietnam war effort, in the 60′s. As many others, a group of friends take shelter and hide in Central Park, New York. A young recruit from Nevada joins them, and discovers a real culture, taking its essence in this troubled period. The songs are amazing, the actors true and charming and the dancing is very dynamic. Also, Hair is based on true stories, and has a strong message.

2nd: Grease

Of course, Grease may be the musical by essence. The young and candid Australian Sandy learns to be a grown-up woman to reconquer Danny Zuko-the bad boy-’s heart. It all takes place in a high-school, between classes, love stories and students dreams for their future. I guess every woman once saw herself in Sandy or Rizzo.

3rd: Hairspray

I’m talking here about the 2007 movie, starring John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer and Nikki Blonsky. Tracy Turnblad is a high-school girl, who only dreams about dancing. She wants to get in the Corny Collins Show, the well-known show for teenagers in 1962 Baltimore. Of course, theres a boy in the story, and he’s no less than Zac Efron. Just like Hair, Hairspray has a cultural background too, with the racial integration issues and battles which took place during that period.

4th: Singing in the rain

Well, no need to introduce this astonishing movie! Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, it relates the story of three Hollywood actors caught in the brand new talking pictures. As Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, the well-known silent-films stars, try to adapt, the young Kathy Selden makes her place, and takes Don’s heart, thanks to her most beautiful voice. Singing and dancing as you have rarely seen, communicative emotions and so much charm!

5th: Footloose

Footloose is quite different from the previous movies. Instead of characters singing and dancing as a part of their role, the music now comes from a stereo, and sounds more like a soundtrack than like a real part of the story. Later, I saw similar musicals, like Dirty Dancing and Fame, but I didn’t like them that much. Though, Footloose is excellent, because the soundtrack is made of popular songs, and also thanks to Kevin Bacon’s talents as a dancer.
